DOCUMENT MANAGEMENT PRESENTS FIRST MARKET ACHIEVEMENT AWARD TO
FileNET CORPORATION...Document Management, the Magazine on Information Assets for
Top 1000 Company Decision Makers, has presented its first DOCUMENT MANAGEMENT
1998 MARKET ACHIEVEMENT AWARD to FileNET Corporation for garnering a substantial
share of the INSURANCE MARKET. The award was presented on May 12th to Lee Roberts,
President and CEO of FileNET Corporation, at the annual 1998 AIIM SHOW and
CONFERENCE.
"It is appropriate that our first award is going to FileNET, the longest, continuous operating
company and the largest pure-play company in our industry," according to Richard N. Stover,
editor and publisher of Document Management Magazine. "And FileNET just happens to have the
largest installed base of imaging and document management systems in insurance companies. It is
a tribute to their marketing prowess that they are meeting the challenges of this fast-changing
marketplace, especially in converting from a hardware solutions supplier to a software solutions
supplier. It is clear that FileNET's products, coupled with its increased market-based strategy is
having a heavy impact on the industry."
Document Management Magazine was the first publication to recognize four major active market
segments of the document management industry. Those segments have been covered within the
Magazine and on the Document Management Web site (www.docmanage.com) for more than one
year. The overall segments are MANUFACTURING (including Discrete Product and Process,
Petrochemical), PUBLIC SECTOR (including Utilities, Telecommunications, Transportation and
Governments), FINANCIAL SERVICES (Insurance, Banking, Investment Banking), and
HEALTHCARE.
To recognize the growth of any market segment and of any vendor that has played a significant
role in developing that segment, Document Management Magazine grants their Market
Achievement Awards to those vendors that in the opinions of the Magazine?s editorial staff, have
been successful in penetrating a given segment with cost-effective solutions.
Recognizing vendors that achieve a significant number of successful installations in a given market
segment is one of Document Management?s methods of signaling the user community within that
market segment that one vendor has reached a significant level of acceptance by their compatriots.
Additional Market Achievement Awards will be announced in the future by Document
Management Magazine.

Sun and Maxim I/T announce industry's first complete Java technology product data management
solution...
Mission-PDM is the first PDM solution implemented entirely using Java technology. Java
technology has become widespread as a client-side interface in the PDM industry, but Maxim I/T's
flagship product is the first complete client/server Java technology solution. In product data
management, adoption of Java technology has been rapid, with most major PDM vendors now
offering a Java technology client interface. The introduction of Mission-PDM takes that trend to
the next level. Using Java technology to build the entire allocation gives several advantages,
including ease of adding remote servers of any platform to the PDM network, rapid development
of application functionality, and increased ability to give non-technical personnel access to PDM
data. For more information, contact 765-463-4710, fax 765-463-7004.

Iterated Systems announces support of the W3C Synchronized Multimedia Integration Language
(SMIL)...
SMIL enables Web development authors to bring television-like content to the Web, avoiding the
limitations of traditional television and significantly lowering the bandwidth requirements for
transmitting this type of content over the Internet. Created and developed by the W3C
Synchronized Multimedia Working Group, SMIL is an XML-based language for writing TV-like
multimedia presentations for the World Wide Web. Using SMIL, Website creators will be able to
easily define and synchronize multimedia elements (video, sound, still images) for Web
presentation and interaction. Currently, creators can send moving images, still images and sound
to a Web user, but each element is separated from the others and can't be coordinated with other
elements without elaborate programming. SMIL lets site creators send multiple movies, still
images and sound separately while coordinating their timing. For more information, contact
404-264-8000 or info@iterated.com.

Recent EDMS standards events attack barriers to proliferation of integrated document
applications...
Over the past week, several isolated events have occurred on the standards front: (1) A group of
20 vendors led by Netscape, Sun and HP proposed a standard based on SWAP (Simple Workflow
Access Protocol) to link disparate intranet workflow systems over the Internet; (2) the Workflow
Management coalition (WfMC) and the Document Management Alliance (DMA) will be at the
upcoming AIIM show demonstrating the ability to link workflow systems and document
management systems, respectively, and their combined ability to link workflow systems with
document management systems; and (3) the WfMC recently issued a proposal to create within its
domain a user to further drive the development of the WfMC standards and their wide-scale
adoption. As individual EDMS technologies have matured from standalone point solutions to
components of enterprise solutions, the role of standards has not been overlooked. In Delphi's
research over the last five years, users identified workable standards as either first or second
among document functionality improvements. This ranking is a good indication of users'
frustration with the current interoperability deficit. This year promises to be a turning point. The
release of the awaited DMA standard brings a new element to life. The multi-vendor DMA
capability demonstration, along with that of the WfMC, should be a show highlight at AIIM 1998.
But before raising the victory flag, one must appreciate the obstacles that remain. The sudden
introduction of SWAP in the wake of maturing WfMC standards indicates that the vendor
community is still not focused on the WfMC process. By definition, standards will only succeed if
there is a consistent single message from the vendor community. Information provided by The
Delphi Group, Boston, MA, which is on the Internet at http://www.delphigroup.com.
