BancTec, Inc. (NYSE: BTC) announced its new ReadFIRST...

check and document recognition solution that capitalizes on the latest ICR (intelligent character recognition) technology. ReadFIRST analyzes character and field-level data in a variety of image-enabled applications, including remittance, sales draft, lockbox, check, POD, and international GIRO document processing. Its recognition process can be adjusted to match specific end-user application requirements and document quality needs. Check and document images are preprocessed to locate fields of interest such as courtesy and handwritten legal amounts. Courtesy (or numeric) amounts can be processed for recognition multiple times to obtain the best possible read rates. Confidence levels are established for each recognition pass both for the courtesy amount field and on a character basis. Running in a Windows NT environment, the ReadFIRST platform provides scalability, upgradability, and flexibility for growth and performance. It supports multiple ICR engines which, when coupled into a multi-engine voting system, produces a 15-20% recognition improvement and a significant reduction in error rates over traditional single-engine processing. Bitonal and/or grayscale versions of ReadFIRST are currently available. In late 1998, BancTec plans on adding a change of address and mark sense capability that will enable ReadFIRST to identify customer-written change of address notifications on remittance documents and to perform other mark sense detections. Chrystal Software Ships New Applications For Astoria 3.0...

Chrystal's content management solution for technical publishing groups. These applications, Web Services and Web Services Advisor are the first in a series of new products for Astoria 3.0 customers in the United States and Europe. Chrystal's Web Services offers secure access to and navigation through the content of documents or document components stored in a corporate repository. Advisor allows reviewers to construct their own comments and edits on-line while viewing the remarks of others. Web Services provides online access to content stored in Astoria for any casual reader seeking information as well as technical editors, reviewers, authors and other contributors with access privileges. By providing both guest and authenticated user access, Web Services can provide general access to public documents while maintaining controlled access to confidential information. Since Web Services provides a direct link to the Astoria repository, users have access to the most current information. Web Services works in Intranet, Extranet and Internet environments and incorporates the Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) encryption standard to protect all transmitted data. In addition to necessary security measures, Web Services provides an easy-to-use Web-style search interface that can use both content and context to locate documents or document components in the Astoria 3.0 repository. Any document type may be accessed using Web Services: XML and SGML documents are converted on-the-fly to HTML and displayed within the browser; other web standards (HTML, JPEG and GIF) are viewed directly from within the browser; formats not supported by the browser are downloaded to the desktop. Web Services Advisor eliminates the need to print and distribute a document to initiate the review process. When authors are ready to send content out for online review, they will use Astoria Navigator and Advisor to point the reviewer directly to the content under review. Reviewers can attach comments directly to the appropriate content. Advisor automatically records the reviewer's name, time of day, status, actual comments and other meaningful information. Authors can access annotations in real time for processing and integrate the suggested changes into the document. Standard Web browsers allow reviewers to participate in the review process without the need for special hardware or software. These are the first two of several applications announced in May that are now shipping to customers worldwide. Web Services server licenses start at $15,000. Additional licenses are available at a lesser price. Advisor server licenses are $7,500. Chrystal Software is a Xerox New Enterprise Company. Excalibur Technologies Corporation announced RetrievalWare, release 6.6...

Enhancements include a new plug-in architecture, access to the Lotus Notes and Microsoft Exchange groupware platforms, and a new semantic search capability that recognizes proper names and places. The new plug-in architecture, called Access Filter Modules (AFMs), will allow the addition of a new data source or document type, without modifying the base system or requiring reinstallation to take advantage of the new functionality. The Lotus Notes and MS-Exchange support are the first examples of this new plug-able architecture. The new semantic search capability is based on the NetOwl Extractor from IsoQuest, Inc. This natural language technology will identify proper names, places, organizations, etc., contained in the document repositories accessible to RetrievalWare. Using this capability, a user could ask the tool to identify all people named in a document collection, without first having to know all the possible names and then specifying them in the search terms. Someone's name appearing multiple times in a document collection might, for example, suggest that person is a knowledge resource in the context of the particular query. Excalibur RetrievalWare 6.6 is available this month on Windows NT Intel, NT Alpha, and all major UNIX platforms. U. S. pricing begins at $9,950 per server. NetRight Technologies Acquires FrontOffice's Technology...

NetRight Technologies, a provider of scalable enterprise-wide document management systems (DMS), announced the acquisition of FrontOffice's technology. The combined strengths of this new entity delivers a unique product offering which will satisfy diverse corporate enterprise-wide document processing needs. NetRight believes there is tremendous payback for companies that achieve high-value document mobility across the enterprise. The acquisition of FrontOffice's technology provides the necessary components to ensure that documents can be accessed and reviewed by the broadest set of authorized corporate users. Corporate buying trends indicate that departments with high document processing "pain-factors" generally take the initiative to pilot DMS solutions that meet their specific needs. Although the goal is enterprise deployment, the pilots are resulting in highly customized departmental solutions that fail to meet the needs of the company as a whole. The value proposition that NetRight and FrontOffice bring to the user community is the ability to solve this dilemma. The combination of strengths between the two products promises to address both the depth and breadth of corporate document processing needs. NetRight believes document management will extend its reach to not only include internal document accessibility but also to become an epicenter for conducting E-commerce. The ability to broker information (via DMS) between business partners and suppliers is a compelling reason for corporations to select a single-source enterprise-wide DMS solution. NetRight's delivery of high-value documents across geographically dispersed locations has provided iManage with strong E-commerce and extranet capabilities that forward looking companies are demanding. NetRight Technologies is a privately held company headquartered in Sunnyvale, California. The combined products of FrontOffice and iManage will be sold through authorized resellers. Additional NetRight/FrontOffice product announcements will be made in Q4, 1998. For more information please contact Edith Greene at (408)523-4005 or sales@netright.com.

Lotus Development Corp. and Compaq Computer Corporation...

announced the formation of a business alliance to deliver integrated Knowledge Management solutions through resellers. The partnership is offering two knowledge management applications that run on, and come bundled with, Domino 4.6 and Compaq's Windows NT-based servers. According to The Delphi Group, Inc., Lotus continues to aggressively deliver vertical knowledge-based applications based on Domino, in its quest to stake early dominance in the knowledge management market. While this partnership with Compaq is viewed as a positive move, it is not seen as strategic. A hardware platform on which to implement the knowledge application is perhaps one of the least critical elements to a knowledge solution, but it does further the turnkey-like nature of the knowledge applications that Lotus is promoting. The real strength of the offerings come with the bundling of knowledge management software that promotes the leveraging of collective wisdom in targeted vertical applications. Early market reaction to this Lotus' campaign indicates that it is achieving the right results. A recent Delphi survey of users and evaluators of knowledge management ranked Lotus/IBM the leading vendor of knowledge management applications. The first two applications offered through the partnership are Cipher Systems' Knowledge Works, which captures and analyzes competitive intelligence, and GlobalServe's Research Accelerator, a collaboration tool for research and development organizations. These bundled solutions are immediately available in the United States only. Pricing varies by reseller. Lotus and Compaq will launch a joint sales program to enable and train sales teams on Lotus Notes and Domino Knowledge Management solutions and will continue to recruit additional business partners who have expertise in the leveraging of knowledge in specific vertical markets. Lotus plans to introduce similar bundles for messaging, enterprise resource planning, and vertical markets such as health care and retail later this year. For more information contact Elena Fernandez, Lotus Development, 617-693-1606, elena_fernandez-@lotus.com. Courtesy of The Delphi Group (www.delphigroup.com).
