Graphics Corp. Announces Major Honeywell Purchase Agreement...
Informative
Graphics Corp., a leading developer of viewing and collaboration software for engineering
and manufacturing, announced the signing of a corporate purchase agreement with Honeywell.
Under terms of the agreement, Honeywell will purchase up to $250,000 in Informative
Graphics' products over the next three years, in addition to annual maintenance fees.
Informative
Graphics will provide software that enables Honeywell to use documents and drawings
electronically, either through a desktop or Web browser delivery. The MYRIAD product is
the only leading commercial viewer to embed Adobe Acrobat for accurate PDF viewing and
extend Acrobat for Web annotation with metadata print bannering and watermarking. MYRIAD
provides a common interface to work with both legacy documents that have been scanned to
TIFF, as well as new documents captured to PDF using a product such as Informative
Graphics' MakePDF. The MYRIAD view and markup program is currently installed at the
Honeywell MICRO SWITCH Division in Freeport, Illinois and the Business and Commuter
Aviation Systems Division in Phoenix, Arizona. MYRIAD will be used in the change
order/document revision process at both locations in conjunction with the MatrixOne PDM
systems. The BCSD group will use MYRIAD on products that include flight instrumentation,
radio and radar. The MICRO SWITCH Division
products in the ECO process include electromechanical switching and sensing components.
Eventually, MatrixOne and MYRIAD will handle the workflow on 35,000 products designed by
Honeywell MICRO SWITCH.
Honeywell
set out looking for a redline and markup tool with the ability to perform watermarking on
both TIFF and PDF files, according to Alan Metzger, Honeywell's Director of Product Data
Management Global Resource Center. "MYRIAD was selected for its ease of use and the
simplified training requirements we felt it brought to the table," he said.
"We're
very pleased with this agreement," said Gary Heath, CEO and President of Informative
Graphics Corp. "It validates the business value we bring to Adobe PDF, as well as
IGC's Web strategy. That strategy enables effective use of digital documents across the
enterprise and beyond it. Given the variety and scope of projects Honeywell undertakes,
we're glad to provide them with a full set of products that helps maximize their
efficiency and streamline their design and engineering change processes."

Market
Forces, Not Government Regulations, Will Best Alleviate Internet Privacy Concerns...
Avoiding
government regulations and instead harnessing the profit incentives driving businesses is
the best Internet privacy policy, according to a new study by the Pacific Research
Institute for Public Policy (PRI), a California-based think tank.
"A
free-market approach to privacy helps consumers protect their privacy, protects the
freedom and enterprise that underline the Internets promising future, and ensures
that the U.S. Constitution remains intact," says Justin Matlick, author of Governing
Internet Privacy: A Free Market Primer and director of PRIs Center for Freedom and
Technology. The study shows that the most effective strategy to protect Internet privacy
would:
*
Protect consumer privacy by allowing economic forces to dominate. Businesses are rapidly
responding to alleviate concerns about Internet privacy by enacting privacy policies and
by creating and distributing technologies - such as the "platform for privacy
preferences" (P3P) - that allow Internet users and web sites to automatically
communicate about privacy preferences and practices.
*
Leave the legal framework that simultaneously allows for privacy and free speech intact. A
complicated mix of statutes, judicial decisions, constitutional provisions, and legal
interpretations already exists to strike the necessary balance between competing
constitutional interests while allowing individuals - including Internet users - to
exercise varying degrees of control over their personal information.
*
Protect the economic forces driving the Information Age. Government-imposed consumer
protection requirements over the Internet, including privacy regulations, would force web
sites
to bear the costs of implementing these requirements, the costs of complying with them,
and the liability costs of noncompliance. The costs would likely prevent many
entrepreneurs from starting online small businesses, would be passed on to consumers in
the form of price increases, and would limit the ever expanding choices available to
consumers online.
"Until
regulation advocates realize the pitfalls of new Internet privacy regulations, it seems
likely we will continue marching forward with legislative proposals that will harm
consumers, hinder electronic commerce, and set dangerous legal precedents," states
Matlick. "That's a dangerous path to follow, considering what an integral part
electronic commerce, the Internet, and telecommunications will be playing in the future of
our economy and society."
Furon
Enables Enterprise Information Management With Intra.doc!...

Technology
Builders and Software Productivity Centre Announce Integration of Requirements Management
and Project Estimation...
Technology
Builders, Inc. (TBI) and Software Productivity Centre Inc. (SPC) announced the integration
of two award-winning applications: SPC's software project planning and estimation tool,
ESTIMATE Professional and TBI's requirements management system, Caliber-RM. The
integration allows software project managers to provide immediate estimates and analysis
for project plans, budgets, development efforts and costs required to deliver the set of
functionality described in the requirements. The importance of having a sound estimate
based on valid input, such as well-defined requirements, cannot be underplayed given
shocking industry statistics. A 1998 Standish Group survey of 8,000 software projects
found that:
ˇ The
average project exceeds its planned budget by 90% and its schedule by 120%.
ˇ 33%
of all projects are over budget and late.
ˇ 52.7%
of projects will cost 189% of their original estimates. Only 16.2% of projects will be
completed on time, on budget.
ˇ The
average time overrun is 222% of the origina estimate. In large companies, only 9% of
projects come in on time, on budget.
As
development partners, SPC and TBI are teaming up to provide a powerful solution for the
leading causes of software project failure - poorly defined requirements and poor project
estimation. By integrating ESTIMATE Professional with Caliber-RM, project managers obtain
comprehensive requirements-based estimates to help them better allocate resources, and
more accurately project timeframe and costs in the early phases of a project.
